Hakodate is a charming and historic port city located in southern Hokkaidô. The name "Hakodate" (函館), which literally means "box-shaped building," likely originates from the architecture of an old square fort or from the natural shape of the port, surrounded by mountains that offer natural protection, resembling a container.
Mount Hakodate: One of Japan's Best Night Views
One of the must-see attractions in Hakodate is Mount Hakodate, a former volcano standing at 334 meters high. It's renowned for offering one of Japan's top three night views, alongside Mount Inasa in Nagasaki and Mount Rokko in Kobe.
From the observatory at the summit, visitors are treated to a breathtaking panorama of the city and the surrounding bay, especially mesmerizing at dusk. As the sun sets, the city sparkles under the lights while the sky transitions through a stunning range of colors.
Even if you can’t visit Japan, you can still enjoy this view via their live webcam!
When Is the Best Time to Visit the Observatory?
The ideal time to visit the Mount Hakodate observatory is about 30 minutes before sunset. This timing allows you to witness the magical shift between day and night, when the city starts to light up and the sky changes color.
In winter, a highlight is the Hakodate Winter Festival, held in early February. The festival is marked by fireworks at 8 p.m., lasting around 20 minutes. Watching this spectacle from the observatory is a truly unforgettable experience, drawing in large crowds.
Whatever season you visit, make sure to go on clear weather days and arrive early, as it quickly fills up with visitors. We went in January, and it was packed with tourists by nightfall.
