Fukuura Island, or福浦島 (Fukuura jima / Prosperity Bay Island), is a true gem of Matsushima Bay, famous for its picturesque landscapes and serene atmosphere.
Connected to the mainland by a 252-meter-long vermillion bridge, affectionately called "the bridge of romantic encounters," Fukuura Island is a particularly photogenic spot. This bridge is illuminated from April to August between 6 PM and 10 PM, and from September to March between 5 PM and 10 PM.
During the week of the full moon, the lights are turned off to let the natural magic of the moon's reflection on the water take over, making this one of the most beautiful places in Japan to admire the moon.

The History of Fukuura Island
A Place of Meditation and Contemplation
Considered one of Japan's three most beautiful landscapes alongside Miyajima Island and the Amanohashidate sandbar, Fukuura Island has long attracted Buddhist monks for meditation. In the 17th century, under the rule of the Date clan, the island became part of the sightseeing tours for samurai elites. Date Masamune (1567-1636), a powerful daimyo of the Edo period and founder of Sendai, frequently visited Matsushima and its islands.
Opening to the Public
It wasn't until the Meiji era (1868-1912) that the island became more accessible to the public. It was transformed into a natural park to preserve its beauty and biodiversity while offering a space for relaxation and contemplation for visitors from Japan and beyond. The vermillion bridge was inaugurated in 1967.
