Omotenashi - Poitiers

Founded in 2014, the Omotenashi Association has become a key player in fostering Franco-Japanese cultural exchange in Poitiers. Its name, inspired by the Japanese concept of warm and selfless hospitality, perfectly reflects its mission: to build connections between cultures, people, and generations.

Driven by a passionate team of volunteers, Omotenashi offers a welcoming space for anyone interested in Japan, its language, traditions, or everyday life. The association also provides meaningful support to Japanese residents in the area, helping them integrate more easily into life in France.

A Dual Mission for Intercultural Dialogue

Omotenashi operates with two core goals. The first is to introduce French-speaking audiences to Japanese culture through language classes, themed workshops, art events, and friendly gatherings.

The second focus is supporting Japanese nationals living in Poitiers and its surroundings. The association assists with administrative tasks, housing, healthcare, and education. It also offers a space where people can connect in their native language, share cultural touchstones, and form new bonds.

Japanese Language Classes for Everyone

Learning Japanese isn’t just for experts! Each year, Omotenashi offers Japanese language classes for teens and adults, organized by level—from complete beginner to intermediate. Classes are taught by an experienced native-speaking instructor in a warm and supportive environment.

Most lessons are held online, allowing participants to join from anywhere, with occasional in-person sessions in Poitiers that encourage face-to-face interaction and spoken practice.

Conversation groups complement the courses and provide a relaxed space for learners to practice speaking, whether to maintain their skills or prepare for an upcoming trip to Japan.

Cultural Workshops to Spark Curiosity

Throughout the year, Omotenashi hosts cultural workshops that showcase the many facets of Japan: calligraphy, sashiko embroidery, rakugo (comic storytelling), cooking, traditional games, and more.

These workshops are open to everyone, regardless of their prior knowledge of Japanese culture, and are mainly held at the Ligue de l’Enseignement in Poitiers, a long-standing partner of the association.

Events That Bring People Together

Beyond its classes and workshops, Omotenashi takes part in many local events, from the annual Associations Fair to festive gatherings like the Shinnenkai (Japanese New Year celebration) and group outings in the region.

In 2025, the association celebrated its 10th anniversary with a major event in the heart of Poitiers, featuring concerts, exhibitions, demonstrations, and cultural activities. A vibrant testament to its ongoing mission to connect and share.
